Tell everyone what they need to know when they need to know

Due to the changes to the Mathematic curriculum for Key Stage 1 and 2 we have created a series of Maths videos to explain calculations and the visual representation of the concepts to make Maths make sense! These videos are for children (to recap on their previous learning), parents to help support their children and for staff to ensure a consistent approach to teaching and learning of mathematics occurs across the school. At the end of every video a Number mind map is added to with the new learning with links between learning to show that mathematical understanding needs to be linked as a whole idea.

The mathematics curriculum has been designed to focus on 3 main areas of mathematics:

  • Fluency

  • Problem Solving

  • Reasoning

Mathematical fluency is based on:

Efficiency - this implies that children do not get bogged down in too many steps or lose track of the logic of the strategy. An efficient strategy is one that the student can carry out easily, keeping track of sub-problems and making use of intermediate results to solve the problem.

Accuracy -  depends on several aspects of the problem-solving process, among them careful recording, knowledge of number facts and other important number relationships, and double-checking results.

Flexibility -  requires the knowledge of more than one approach to solving a particular kind of problem, such as two-digit multiplication. Students need to be flexible in order to choose an appropriate strategy for the numbers involved, and also be able to use one method to solve a problem and another method to check the results
